Abstract:
The invention pertains to a thermo-optical switch comprising a cascade of 1ÃM optical switches, gates for selectively blocking and unblocking the output paths of the cascaded switch, and means for driving the 1ÃM switches and the gates, which means are arranged to switch a data signal from an input path of the cascaded switch to one of the output paths, wherein the said means are also arranged to switch an unwanted signal, by means of a number of the remaining 1ÃM switches, to at least one of the remaining output paths. In the cascaded switch according to the invention, the generated heat is distributed evenly over the area of the switch and the overall amount of heat generated is reduced.
Mechanical Beam Steering For Optical Integrated Circuits
Optical circuits are disclosed having mechanical beam steering. The mechanical beam steering can mitigate thermal sensitivity of optical circuits, for example, arrayed waveguides. Also disclosed are methods for fabricating optical integrated circuits employing mechanical beam steering.
Optical devices and methods for attenuating, shuttering, or switching optical signals as found in telecommunications. A platform carrying a portion of a waveguide and residing in a plane of a substrate is tipped, tilted, twisted, or otherwise moved out of the plane of the substrate to divert the path of an optical signal or to change coupling between adjacent waveguides. The platform can be formed by etching a substrate while leaving one or more connection points between the platform and the substrate to hold the platform to the substrate.

Abstract:
Optical integrated circuits are disclosed having a gap traversing the lens or the waveguide grating and an actuator that controllably positions the optical integrated circuit on each side of the gap. As a result, the thermal sensitivity of the optical integrated circuits, for example, arrayed waveguide gratings, is mitigated. Also disclosed are methods for fabricating optical integrated circuits employing the gap and actuator.
Waveplate For Optical Integrated Circuits And Methods For Manufacturing The Same
Optical circuits are disclosed having a waveplate intersecting curvilinear optical waveguides in order to mitigate polarization dependence. The waveplate is offset from the center or midpoint of the waveguides such that the intersections of the waveplate with the waveguides result in little or no back-reflection, while also providing polarization independent operation. Also disclosed are methods for fabricating optical integrated circuits.
Optical integrated circuits are disclosed in which a polarization swapping portion is formed in a portion of a waveguide using polarized light from a laser. Also disclosed are methods for fabricating optical integrated circuits and for mitigating polarization dependence in optical integrated circuits.
