    A seismic anchor has a head for location in a hole in ground-connected structure and a shaft connected thereto to extend out of the hole and mount members or equipment to be isolated from vibrations. The head is surrounded by vibration damping means, such as a high durometer rubber or rubber-like material. A covering extends along the shaft to the damping means. Solidified bonding agent in the hole, above the head and the vibration damping means, secures the anchor in place while the sleeve prevents the bonding agent hardening to the shaft and preventing relative vibration between the ground-connected structure and the shaft.

    Barrier systems and methods include relatively narrow, cast, silica fume concrete road barriers for work site protection, road edge, and traffic lane divider locations. Reflector-bearing caps close recesses at the location of fasteners securing the barriers to a road surface. Reflectors with mounting portions secured between adjacent end faces of barriers project outward to expose a reflector portion to headlights in an adjoining traffic lane. Barrier extension members affixed atop a line of barriers reduce headlight glare, help prevent vehicles toppling over the barriers, and prevent relative rocking of one barrier with respect to another. Permanent barrier installations include a rope-like soft Butyl rubber seal damming locations where fasteners extend into the road surface to retain a hardening bonding agent and form a liquid and contaminant impervious environment for the fasteners. Drop-in-place barriers with openings extending their entire height locate over supporting uprights previously used for metal strip barrier. And barriers to be located quickly on soft undersurfaces have openings extending their entire height and securing posts driven therethrough.

    A retaining element, for retaining personnel, vehicles, or the like, includes a series of lower recesses opening downward to a supporting undersurface. A collar conforming in shape to the recess is located in each recess. An anchor bolt extends through the collar and protrudes downward from each recess, and set screws retaining the collar. In use, holes are formed along a line on the supporting undersurface at locations corresponding to the protruding anchor bolts, the holes are fitted with a hardening securing agent and the retaining element is moved into place with the anchor bolts extending into the hardening securing agent.

    Fastener systems for securing an object to the surface of structure, and methods for forming the same. Shafts of fasteners have threaded ends which are to be embedded in holes formed in the structure and which are filled with a securing agent. For greater pull-out resistance the holes can be enlarged at their internal ends, either by molding or by breaking out the walls of the hole ends with a special tool. A lubricant coating the inserted shaft end permits withdrawal of the fastener shafts. In one embodiment, the external end and the internal end of the shaft are reversely threaded. A cap nut on the external end has a compressible pellet therein. Initial threading downward of the cap nut tightens the nut more securely against the secured object, and further turning unthreads the fastener. A fixed head embodiment carries a cap at its internal end to prevent hardening securing agent from filling in under the shaft so that the shaft can be threaded deeper into the hole when the securing agent hardens.

    A method for avoiding rebar, a fixture useful to that end, a particular fastener for use with the method and fixture, and objects to be fastened adapted for rebar avoidance. Where rebar is encountered drilling directly into a concrete surface, a fixture is moved into place over the hole. The fixture has an angled bit guide that guides the drill bit at an angle into the concrete, away from the rebar and to the appropriate depth. The fixture is removed, the object to be secured is replaced, the original and the inclined hole are filled with a hardening securing agent, and a special bent-shaft fastener is introduced into the inclined hole. The bend of the fastener is such that its upper end projects substantially perpendicular to the surface just as would have been the case had no rebar been encountered and a conventional fastener used. A road barrier or the like has several alternate routes for a fastener at its connection location. The routes may be separate holes or an inclined path through a conical hole.

    Anchor systems for joining structural members include a resiliently deformable member such as a dished washer to permit easy visual determination that the anchor system is correctly tightened in place. Post-tensioned anchor systems of the kind disclosed are particularly suitable for joining structural members, such as end-to-end columns. One of a number of mold parts, including a threaded tapered mold part, forms a threaded tapered hole in a poured concrete structural member for use with anchors, and passages permitting the introduction of a resinous securing agent may be formed in cooperation with the threaded tapered holes. Highway barriers can be formed with such holes and joined with the resin filling the holes and space between barrier ends.
