Abstract:

Methods and apparatus for handling material for the insulating glass industry are disclosed. One method of handling material for the insulating glass industry in accordance with the present invention includes the step of arranging a plurality of bars into a plurality of stacks with adjacent stacks defining spaces dimensioned to receive a bar engaging member. The stacks of bars may then be transported to a desired destination. A bar engaging member may be inserted into a space defined by the stacks, and one or more bars may be grasped using the bar engaging member. A container for handling material for the insulating glass industry is also disclosed. The container may advantageously include a plurality of prearranged bar locating members configured to hold a predetermined type of bar stock.

The present invention provides for an apparatus and method for applying adhesive to the end seals and/or the side glass surface of an insulating glass (IG) window unit to be mounted in a frame or sash. An apparatus and method of using the apparatus is provided by which adhesive is applied to the end regions of the insulating glass unit with one or more nozzles while a separate side arm extends from the device and alongside the insulating glass unit having a nozzle that delivers adhesive bead to the side of the pane to be adhered to the frame or sash.

Abstract:

Methods and apparatus for assembling muntin bar lattices and spacer frames for use in insulating glass units are disclosed. One method of assembling a muntin bar lattice in accordance with the present invention comprises the steps of providing a muntin bar segment and a keeper dimensioned for piercing a wall of the muntin bar segment. A keeper in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention comprises an elongate body including a tip portion that is dimensioned for piercing a wall of the muntin bar segment to create an opening therein. A spacer for the separation of panes in an insulating glass unit in accordance with one exemplary embodiment of the present invention may include a tubular member comprising a wall defining a lumen and a mounting flange defining a plurality of mounting holes.

Abstract:

A connector key for joining spacer member ends in multi-pane window units. A connector key and methods for joining spacer member ends are provided. The connector key can include a top central depression, side walls having top gaps, side shoulders having channels and recesses, all providing opportunity for sealant to flow from the central depression over the side regions of the connector key. Connector keys can also have holes through the bottom floor of the central depression to the bottom of a connector key and further through bottom channels provided in the connector key. Methods are provided which include sliding a spacer member over each end of the connector key up to a central flange. Holes may be punched through the spacer material, preferably forming jagged portions which secure the spacer members to the connecting key. Sealant may be injected through the punched holes, and through the through holes in the connector key central depression floor. Injected sealant may thus flow into the central depression, over the side walls into the side recesses, and into the bottom channels.

Abstract:

The invention provides methods of producing and servicing insulating glass units. Methods are provided for reducing the pressure differential on an IG unit, for changing the interior pressure within an IG unit, and for changing the gaseous interior composition within an IG. These methods can be practiced by forming a hole through at least one of the panes of an IG unit, and flowing gas through the hole. One method includes forming a hole through one of the panes of an IG unit, flowing gas through the hole, and sealing the hole with an optically clear sealant (e. g. , a transparent resin). A number of methods for producing IG units are also provided. Further, several kits are provided for servicing IG units. There is also provided a method for detecting leaks in an IG unit by flowing an opaque gas into the unit and observing the unit to detect leaks of the opaque gas therefrom.
