A method and apparatus for performing authentication in a communication system. The method includes the steps of detecting an unexpected authentication message, updating a counter value, comparing the counter value to a threshold value, and performing an encryption key update operation in response to the comparison between the counter value and the threshold value. The apparatus includes a base station (152), a switching center (128) coupled to the base station (152), and an authentication center (149) responsive to the switching center (128). The switching center (128) detects an unexpected authentication message received by the base station (152). The authentication center (149) updates a counter when the switching center (128) detects the unexpected authentication message and compares the updated counter with a threshold value. The authentication center (149) initiates an encryption key update operation when the updated counter value exceeds the threshold value.
Method And Apparatus For Informing A Remote Unit Of A Feature-Originated Call
Notification of a feature-originated call is provided to a remote unit (103) by determining a feature indication message (312) based on a feature-originated call, and sending the remote unit (103) the feature indication message (538). The feature indication message is sent to the remote unit (103) via a base station (101) utilizing a downlink communication signal (116). In a preferred embodiment the feature indication message consists of a predetermined text message transmitted to the remote unit (103) and is displayed by the remote unit (103) on an alpha-numeric display.

Abstract:
Detection of a fraudulent remote unit (113) in a communication system (100) occurs by external fraud detection equipment (103) located external to, and in proximity to a base site (101). External fraud detection equipment (103) communicates with base site (101) via an uplink communication signal (105) and utilizes fraud detection methods not utilized by internal fraud detection equipment (111) to identify the remote unit (113) as being fraudulent. Once the remote unit (113) is identified by the external fraud detection equipment (103) as being fraudulent, the external fraud detection equipment (103) places an origination order to the base site (101) and supplies identification information on the fraudulent remote unit (113). Infrastructure equipment (109) utilizes information supplied to it by the external fraud detection equipment (103) and disconnects the fraudulent remote unit (113).
