    The invention is a battery with power output terminals on opposite ends of a battery and a power output terminal on the side wall of the battery that has the same polarity as one of the end power output terminals. The presence of the side terminal is indicative of a battery characteristic and allow a battery operated device requiring that characteristic to selectively use the battery when designed to use the side terminal and opposite polarity end terminal to provide energy to operate the device. Because the battery also has opposite polarity end terminals, the battery can be used in devices designed to use batteries of the same dimensions and having the same nominal voltage. The location of the side terminal can also be indicative of additional battery characteristics, allowing the selective use of batteries in devices based on various device requirements.

    An electrical appliance such as a battery charger includes a main body portion and a movable body portion. The apparatus includes a first cavity for receiving batteries. The movable body portion opens to expose a second cavity for receiving batteries. Each of the cavities includes battery receiving regions or bays. Each bay selectively receives a first battery having a relatively larger radial dimension or a plurality of batteries having a relatively smaller radial dimension. The bays can receive various battery sizes, such as AAA, AA, C, and D size batteries. One or more of the bays can receive a generally rectangular 9 volt battery.

    A condensed power supply circuit for powering a gas discharge lamp with bi-directional current reduces duty cycle by increasing dead time. The circuit comprises an arrangement for supplying d. c. power from an a. c. voltage, a series half bridge converter, a boost converter, a resistor-capacitor delay circuit associated with a gate to control dead time, and a snubber capacitance for facilitating zero voltage switching to fill the entire dead time. The series half-bridge converter alternately impresses a d. c. bus voltage from a bus conductor across a load circuit first with one polarity and then with an opposite polarity. The series half-bridge converter includes a first switch, a second switch, and a switching control circuit for alternately switching on the first and second switches. The boost converter comprises a boost capacitor, a boost inductor, and means for periodically connecting a load end of the boost inductor through a low impedance path to the ground conductor, thereby charging the boost inductor. The present invention reduces duty cycle via an increase in dead time.

    A junction component fixed on a PCB (13) has a slot (4) suitable for accepting the electrical leads (10) protruding from the electrical unit and also has a base part (11) and a connection part (12). The base part (11) is embedded into the PCB (13) and is connected with its corresponding output. The leads of the electrical unit are connected to a connection part (12). At the place of connection, the orientation of the electrical leads is substantially perpendicular to the plane of the PCB (13). The direction in which the electrical leads are connected to the connection part (12) is substantially parallel to the plane of the PCB (13). The base part (11) comprises a base plate (1) and tabs(s) (8a-8c) bending out from it. The tab(s) protrude(s) into openings (17) formed in the PCB (13) and is (are) embedded there in a way also ensuring electrical contact to the PCB (13). The base plate (1) connects the tab(s) (8a-8c) with the connection part (12), and the connection part (12) is made to have an orientation substantially in or parallel to the plane of the base plate (1).
