Abstract:
The self-anchoring expansion gap assembly for refractory lined vessels such as a gasifier includes a substantially annular insulating blanket structure formed of compressible refractory material. A coil of rope formed of relatively incompressible refractory material is positioned proximate an outer periphery of the insulating blanket structure. The expansion gap assembly is placed in an expansion gap of a gasifier, for example, such that the coil of rope aligns with an annular channel formed in the refractory lining of the gasifier at the expansion gap. Compression of the expansion gap assembly locks the coil of rope in the annular channel of the expansion gap thereby resisting vacuum pullout. The coil of rope can be formed as a single coil or a plurality of substantially concentric coils preferably from a single length of refractory rope.
The refractory protected, replaceable insert for a gasifier includes a replaceable floor edge insert that is formed with a predetermined mating profile that is complementary to a finished mating profile of the gasifier floor. The geometry of the mating profiles of the replaceable floor edge insert and the gasifier floor permit removable engagement between the floor edge insert and the mating profile of the gasifier floor. The replaceable floor edge insert is protected by a ring-like arrangement of hanging refractory bricks that each include an appendage. Each brick appendage covers a portion of the inner radial edge of the replaceable floor edge insert and also covers an upper surface portion of an underlying quench ring, thus prolonging the life of the floor and the quench ring. A refractory ceramic fiber paper can be provided between the hanging brick and the floor edge and quench ring. Also, a refractory ceramic fiber rope can be provided at the inner peripheral edge of the replaceable floor edge insert upon the upper surface of the quench ring, and overlaid by the appendage.

The protective cap for a thermocouple in a gasifier is installed at an opening of a thermocouple cavity in a hot-face lining of the reaction chamber of the gasifier. The cap is a generally disc-shaped structure that, in one embodiment, includes an upper slag deflecting surface and a lower receding surface. Slag is deflected by the slag deflecting surface over the receding surface to bypass the receding surface. A counterbore is formed in the refractory lining to accommodate the protective cap and to enable the protective cap to be recessed in the refractory lining. Holes can be formed in the cap with an upward incline to minimize the possibility of downwardly moving slag flowing through the holes into the thermocouple cavity. The holes can be made small enough to minimize the risk of allowing excessive radiant heat from reaching the gasifier vessel or shell. A peripheral edge of the cap has upper and lower portions that slope downwardly to help maintain the cap in its position in the counterbore.
An improved quench ring in combination with a reactor vessel having a refractory lined reaction chamber with a bottom outlet and a floor to support the refractory lined reaction chamber, wherein the quench ring is protected by a protective barrier comprising dense refractory brick, dense refractory ramming mix, refractory ceramic fiber, and a metal apron support. The protective barrier is removably attached to a portion of the quench ring hotface and protects the quench ring from the high temperature of the effluent exiting the reaction chamber.

For property rights advocates, the decision was a genuine blow. John Groen of the Pacific Legal Foundation, which brought the case, called it "a shock," adding that the decision "undermines traditional understandings of property rights."

I dont think its right, said John Groen, a rising 10th-grader. I just believe if youre a man, youre a man and if youre a woman, youre a woman. ... Thats how God made you and thats how he sees fit for you to be.
