  • Blank Edge Reform Method And Apparatus For A Container End Closure

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6336780, Jan 8, 2002
  • Filed:
    Mar 18, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    09/271945
  • Inventors:
Howard C. Chasteen - Golden CO
  • Assignee:
    Ball Corporation - Broomfield CO
  • International Classification:
    B21D 5144
  • US Classification:
    413 8, 413 56, 72348, 72352, 72360
  • Abstract:
A non-precurled, non-curled shell is transferred to a reform station. The reform station contains a coin die and a coin punch. The coin die has the desired round finished blank diameter machined into its face. The die cavity has a round die wall which stops the outward flow of material during the coining process. The die wall produces the blanks final shape. During the coining process, the coining punch compresses the scalloped blank edge of the non-curled, non-precurled shell. The coined area causes material to flow outward, coming in contact with the die wall, forming the blanks outer perimeter.
  • Vented Container End Apparatus And Method

  • US Patent:
    6354453, Mar 12, 2002
  • Filed:
    Dec 20, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    09/467644
  • Inventors:
Howard Curtis Chasteen - Golden CO
  • Assignee:
    Ball Corporation - Broomfield CO
  • International Classification:
    B65D 1734
  • US Classification:
    220269, 220271, 413 16, 413 17
  • Abstract:
A container end is provided so that upon opening, a generally triangular vent region is formed with an apex pointing rearwardly toward the head space to vent the container, e. g. during pouring. A container is provided that achieves a fast and smooth pour with a relatively small increase (relative to certain previous configurations) in the opening area and achieves a superior pour without increased bursting, buckling or opening failures associated with relatively larger openings.
  • Selectively Deformable Container End Closure

  • US Patent:
    7107928, Sep 19, 2006
  • Filed:
    May 12, 2004
  • Appl. No.:
    10/844954
  • Inventors:
Howard C. Chasteen - Golden CO, US
Mike Richardson - Superior CO, US
Terre Reingardt - Broomfield CO, US
  • Assignee:
    Ball Corporation - Broomfield CO
  • International Classification:
    G01L 7/08
    G01N 7/14
  • US Classification:
    116270, 2064591, 220DIG 16
  • Abstract:
The present invention describes a container end closure which utilizes a material that is adapted to provide a visible indicator when the internal pressure of the contents increase to a predetermined level. In one embodiment, an interruption in a reinforcing bead incorporated in the end closure is deformed to visually notify a consumer of spoilage due to bacterial activity and to substantially prohibit the use of traditional can openers to access the spoiled contents within the container.
