In May 1968, Dr. Cooley sewed the heart of a 15-year-old into Everett Thomas, a 47-year-old accountant from Phoenix. Thomas later received a second transplant, and he lived about seven months making him the first US heart transplant recipient to be well enough to go home from the hospital.

Denton Cooley, Texas surgeon who performed first successful heart transplant in US, dies at 96
On May 3, 1968, Cooley transplanted a heart into Everett Thomas, 47, whose heart valves were deteriorating. The donor was a 15-year-old girl who had committed suicide. Thomas survived for 204 days and the procedure made national headlines.
