  • Combined Thermocouple And Thermopile Capable Of Generating Multiple Emf Signals

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6740806, May 25, 2004
  • Filed:
    May 5, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/849118
  • Inventors:
Edward Starer - Forest Hills NY 11375
  • International Classification:
    H01L 3528
  • US Classification:
    136227, 136220, 136224, 136208, 136206, 136203, 136217, 136225, 136230, 136232
  • Abstract:
A combined thermocouple and thermopile capable of producing multiple EMF signals. The combined thermocouple and thermopile construction is particularly adapted for use as an electric generator capable of producing multiple EMF signals and able to respond faster to changes to the presence or absence of a pilot or gas burner flame. The conductors of the thermopile are comprised of dissimilar metals joined at each end to form hot and cold thermocouple junctions. The thermopile may provide multiple EMF signals when a third wire lead is affixed to a cold junction between either end of the array. The array of thermocouples is formed in a circle and enclosed in a metal sleeve or jacket. A thermocouple assembly comprised of a standard ferric chrome, nickel chrome or inconel tip; an insulated constantan wire longitudinally centered within and permanently connected to the tip; an insulated copper extension wire permanently affixed to the constantan wire and an insulated copper wire permanently affixed to the outside of the tip; is longitudinally centered within and isolated from the thermopile array contained within a metallic sleeve. The tip of the thermocouple is positioned near but isolated from the thermopile array and metallic sleeve to prevent thermal conductance through the sleeve.
  • Thermopile Construction With Multiple Emf Outputs

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20020153036, Oct 24, 2002
  • Filed:
    Apr 18, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/837312
  • Inventors:
Edward Starer - Forest Hills NY, US
  • International Classification:
    H01L035/28
  • US Classification:
    136/225000
  • Abstract:
An improved thermopile construction particularly adapted for use as an electric generator capable of producing multiple EMF outputs in response to heat from a pilot flame. A cluster of long elements comprised of two dissimilar metals are assembled with one end of one element joined with one end of a second element to form hot and cold thermocouple junctions which are arrayed in a circle. One of the groups of two dissimilar metals being located at the beginning of the array and being longer than the rest of the array extends beyond the other hot junctions allowing for greater sensitivity and responsiveness to changes in the temperature of the pilot flame and surrounding radiating surfaces. The cold junction of the longer elements has an extension wire connected to one of the dissimilar metals forming the thermocouple which leads from the enclosure housing the cluster of thermocouples to serve as the negative lead. The cold junction of a second of two dissimilar metals has an extension wire which leads from the enclosure of the cluster of thermocouples to serve as the positive lead for the thermocouple and thermopile array. The positive and negative leads of the longer elements carry the EMF generated by the temperature differential between the hot and cold junctions. The EMF generated by the longer thermocouple elements is large enough to operate an electromechanical device requiring less voltage than the total thermocouple cluster is capable of generating thus allowing the operation of a device requiring a small EMF and a device requiring the full EMF generated by the total array of thermocouples. Additional extension wires could be connected to additional cold junctions to provide additional EMF voltages for the operation of additional devices.
  • Gas Control Assembly For Controlling The Supply Of Gas To Unvented Gas Appliances

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20040226600, Nov 18, 2004
  • Filed:
    Mar 22, 2004
  • Appl. No.:
    10/805968
  • Inventors:
Edward Starer - Forest Hills NY, US
George Kraus - North Olmsted OH, US
  • International Classification:
    H01L035/02
  • US Classification:
    136/224000, 136/242000
  • Abstract:
An improved gas pilot control apparatus with an improved thermopile construction comprised of a consolidated thermocouple and thermopile capable of providing multiple EMF signals to operate a gas valve, transmitter/receiver and other components when positioned relative to a pilot flame. The improved thermopile requires a pilot flame of typically 500 BTU/hr to generate the EMF milli voltage required by modern gas valves to maintain reliable, rapid and safe operation of the appliance. The improved thermopile is electrically connected to an electromagnetic valve that controls the flow of gas from the source of supply to the pilot and main burner. The thermopiles are electrically connected to electromagnetic valves and to a transmitter/receiver that remotely control the flow of gas to the main burner.
