A brake assembly comprising: (a) a caliper including: (i) one or more pistons, (b) one or more rotary to linear actuators that provides an axial force to move the one or more pistons, (c) a motor gear unit in communication with the one or more rotary to linear actuators, the motor gear unit including: (i) a motor, and (ii) an electromagnetic brake that prevents movement of the motor gear unit, the pistons, or both when the motor is turned off so that the brake apply is maintained.

Abstract:

The present disclosure relates to a brake assembly having: a) a motor; b) a reduction gear system; c) a motor brake having: (i) a toothed wheel; (ii) an electromagnet; (iii) a pawl; (iv) a biasing means; d) a rotary to linear actuator in communication with the reduction gear system that drives one or more brake pads; wherein the pawl is monostable, so that the pawl is engaged with the toothed wheel when the motor brake is in an engaged position to prevent rotation of the toothed wheel and the motor when the electromagnet is not energized, and when the motor brake is in a disengaged position, the pawl moves away from the toothed wheel when the electromagnet is energized so the toothed wheel may rotate freely with the motor; and wherein the biasing means urges the pawl into engagement with the toothed wheel.

Abstract:

An assembly that includes a main housing. A motor is supported in a motor housing that is supported in the main housing. The motor has an output shaft and a locking mechanism. The motor is adapted to generate a first rotational direction torque and a second rotational direction torque. The motor is adapted to transfer the first rotational direction torque and the second rotational direction torque to a destination via the output shaft. The locking mechanism is adapted to prevent the output shaft from back driving in the second rotational direction after the first rotational direction torque has been transferred to the destination. The motor housing is adapted to rotate in the main housing to unlock the locking mechanism so that the second rotational direction torque can be transferred to the destination.

Abstract:

A parking brake system including a motor; a rotary to linear stage mechanism in communication with the motor; and a torque locking mechanism in communication with the motor. The torque locking mechanism includes a rotor; a core; and locking members. During a parking brake apply the motor is adapted to rotate the rotor and move the rotary to linear stage mechanism so that at least one brake pad or at least one brake shoe is moved against a surface to generate a clamp force. After the clamp force is generated and the motor ceases to rotate the rotor, the core and the locking members are magnetically attracted and the locking members move towards the core as a result of the magnetic attraction so that the generated clamp force is maintained after the motor ceases to rotate the rotor.

Abstract:

A planetary gear assembly comprising: a housing, which contains: a planetary carrier, a sun gear, at least one planetary gear, a ring gear, a coil spring; an input shaft; and an output shaft. The coil spring extends around at least a portion of the planetary carrier. The coil spring includes a first tang in communication with the ring gear and a second tang in communication with the housing. When torque is applied to the input shaft, the planetary carrier rotates within the coil spring in one or more driving directions so that torque is transferred to the output shaft. When no torque is applied to the input shaft and torque is applied to the output shaft, the coil spring constricts and provides sufficient contact force to the planetary carrier and housing to prevent the planetary carrier from moving relative to the housing in at least one of the driving directions.
