Abstract:

An enclosed implantable material mixing system is described herein. The system uses an enclosable vial or container into which bone cement mixture may be mixed by agitation. The bone cement mixture may be made of a combination of polymer and liquid monomer, but because of the method of agitation, e.g., shaking the vial and its contents, the ratio of the monomer-to-polymer is critical. A desirable weight ratio of the monomer-to-polymer is about 0.3 to about 1, and more preferably about 0.53 to about 0.63, and is more preferably about 0.57. The vial or container may also include a free-floating, or disassociated, agitator to aid with the mixing process. To prepare the composition, the vial and its contents may be capped and shaken until the mixture dissolves completely. The contents of the vial are then allowed to sit and undergo a solvation process at the end of which the mixture may be shaken again and then poured out for use.

Abstract:

Abstract:

A spacer for an artificial spinal disc arrangement is provided. The artificial disc arrangement includes an upper plate, a lower plate, and articulating surfaces between the upper and lower plates arranged to permit motion between the upper and lower plates. The spacer has a first surface for contacting the upper plate and a second surface for contacting the lower plate and is of sufficient thickness such that, when disposed between the upper and lower plates, the spacer limits motion between the upper and lower plates. An artificial disc, a method of limiting motion of an artificial disc in a patient, and a method of performing spinal disc surgery are also disclosed.

Abstract:

Two component, storage stable apatitic cement compositions, as well as methods for their production, are provided. The dry component of subject apatitic cements comprises basic calcium source particles at least partially coated with a partially neutralized acidic calcium phosphate. The dry component of subject compositions is prepared by combining basic calcium source particles with dissolved acidic phosphate in at least a partially aqueous medium, whereby the basic calcium source particles become partially coated with a partially neutralized acidic calcium phosphate. The reaction is terminated prior to completion of the reaction between the acidic phosphate and the basic calcium source by removing the available water from the reaction mixture. In a first mode, the subject cement may be produced by mechanically mixing an acidic phosphate source with basic calcium source particles in the presence of an aqueous solvent and stopping the reaction between the acid and base prior to completion. Alternatively, a phosphoric acid solution may be rapidly combined with a basic calcium phosphate particle slurry such that partially neutralized acidic calcium phosphate precipitates on the surface of the basic calcium phosphate particles.

Methods for producing a room temperature stable, phase pure. alpha. -C. sub. 3 P product, and compositions derived therefrom, are provided. In the subject method, a tricalcium phosphate source is heated to a temperature sufficient to convert substantially all of said tricalcium phosphate source to a substantially phase pure. alpha. -C. sub. 3 P product. Abstract:

Calcium phosphate cements are provided. The subject cements comprise amorphous calcium phosphate, at least one additional calcium source, usually an additional calcium phosphate, and a liquid component, such as a physiologically acceptable lubricant. Upon combination of the cement components, a flowable composition capable of setting in vivo into a solid calcium phosphate mineral product, such as hydroxyapatite, is produced. The subject cement compositions find use in a variety of applications, including the treatment of injured or compromised hard tissue.
