    A drip plate design is provided for a solid ink color printer which reliably directs on-demand ink flow and securely retains solidified ink. The drip plate design includes a combination of one or more sized and shaped cutouts and protrusions for anchoring a solidified ink stick when the printer is not in operation and protrusions that impede downward movement of independent portions of an ink stick so that they remain in contact with a heated melt plate long enough to substantially melt, thereby inhibiting the unchecked sliding off of large separated slivers and chunks of ink during melt and delivery.

    A printer and method have been developed that vary the force applied by the transfer roller against the imaging member to facilitate the climb of the transfer roller as the media enters the nip and then apply an appropriate force for effective transfer of an image from the imaging member to the media. The printer includes an imaging member, a transfer roller located proximate to the imaging member, a controller being configured to generate signals that control movement of the transfer roller, and a displaceable linkage coupled to the controller to receive signals from the controller that control movement of the transfer roller and coupled to the transfer roller to move the transfer roller into and out of contact with the imaging member, the displaceable linkage applying a first move of the transfer roller into contact with the imaging member to form a transfer nip at a commanded first force, the displaceable linkage applying a second move to the transfer roller at a commanded second force, and the displaceable linkage applying a third move to the transfer roller at a commanded third force.

    An optical encoder assembly has an encoder sensor, a code strip, and a base having a first portion and a second portion, wherein the encoder sensor is mounted on one of either the first portion or the second portion and the code strip is mounted on the other portion. An optical encoder assembly has a base having an upper base and a lower base, the upper base joined to the lower base with at least one flexible beam, an encoder sensor mounted to one of the upper base or the lower base, and a code strip mounted to the other of the upper base or the lower base. A method includes mounting an encoder sensor to a first mating surface on the first side of a base, mounting a code strip to a second mating surface on the second side of the base with the first and second sides of the base connected by at least one flexible beam, and attaching the base to an object to be measured such that deflections between the first and second mating surfaces can be measured using the encoder sensor.
