  • Assignee:
    R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company - Winston-Salem NC
  • International Classification:
    A24B 1500
  • US Classification:
    131359
  • Abstract:
A low-density filler material for cigarettes from either a low-density tobacco composition or an extruded grain or starch composition. The low-density tobacco composition and a method of making the low-density tobacco composition by extruding a mixture of tobacco and flour or tobacco and starch under conditions whereby the solvent in the extruded mixture flashes into vapor upon release from the extrusion head. The low-density tobacco composition is formed without the aid of an added binder. The low-density flour or starch material and a method of making it by extruding flour or starch with a filler material such as calcium carbonate under conditions whereby the solvent in the extruded mixture flashes into vapor upon extrusion through the orifice die. The extruded composition can then be cut and used in place of cut tobacco filler.
  • Adjustable-Delivery Cigarette

    view source
  • US Patent:
    46484132, Mar 10, 1987
  • Filed:
    Mar 7, 1984
  • Appl. No.:
    6/587325
  • Inventors:
Barry L. Saintsing - Lexington NC
    Douglas C. Clark - Winston-Salem NC
John D. Weber - Clemmons NC
  • International Classification:
    A24D 304
  • US Classification:
    131336
  • Abstract:
An adjustable-delivery cigarette and method for producing same, whose strength delivery may be altered by the consumer in a range between higher and lower values. The cigarette includes a tobacco rod, with paper wrapper, and the filter assembly. An overwrap encircles the filter element and may also join the filter element to the tobacco rod. The overwrap has an adjustment zone formed therein, which may be in the form of a circumferential slot. The circumferential slot may extend partially through the overwrap, or may extend completely through the overwrap and partially through the filter plugwrap. In the latter instance, the filter plugwrap should be relatively impervious to airflow. Application by the consumer of a bending moment to the filter assembly results in the adjustment zone being ruptured, allowing a greater degree of air dilution, resulting in a decreased perceptible strength to the consumer. This adjustable-delivery cigarette can be manufactured conveniently using laser apparatus known to the art, modified and adjusted to achieve the desired levels of penetration.
  • Filter Cigarette Having Segmented Sections

  • US Patent:
    47593806, Jul 26, 1988
  • Filed:
    Nov 3, 1986
  • Appl. No.:
    6/926292
  • Inventors:
Alan B. Norman - Clemmons NC
    Thomas A. Perfetti - Winston-Salem NC
Barry L. Saintsing - Lexington NC
Kenneth W. Swicegood - Lexington NC
  • Assignee:
    R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company - Winston-Salem NC
  • International Classification:
    A24D 100
    A24D 104
  • US Classification:
    131364
  • Abstract:
Filter cigarettes can be manufactured in a highly cost effective manner. Filter cigarettes include a tobacco rod having two segments of smokable material. The first segment is positioned at the lighting end of the cigarette and includes expensive, normally high quality tobaccos. The second segment is positioned at the filter end of the rod and includes cost effective smokable materials. A cellulose acetate filter element is axially aligned with the rod and is positioned adjacent to the second segment. Tipping material attaches the filter element to the tobacco rod. The second segment extends along the rod up to about 20 mm past the foremost point which the tipping material extends. The combined longitudinal length of the filter element and the second segment extends up to about 60 percent of the total length of the smoking article.

  • Filed:
    Sep 15, 1992
  • Appl. No.:
    7/945042
  • Inventors:
    Thomas A. Perfetti - Winston-Salem NC
    Dennis L. Carespodi - Winston-Salem NC
Barry L. Saintsing - Lexington NC
Matthew S. Koschak - Pfafftown NC
  • Assignee:
    R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company - Winston-Salem NC
  • International Classification:
    A24D 300
  • US Classification:
    131335
  • Abstract:
A cigarette has a blend of tobacco materials and a filter element provided from a non-woven thermoplastic material. The non-woven material comprises polyester or polypropylene fibers. The non-woven material is in intimate contact with a high molecular weight material (e. g. , an emulsifier or another polymeric material). As such the filter material is coated with another polymeric material. The coated non-woven material can be in intimate contact with an acidic material (e. g. , lactic acid) or a basic material (e. g. , sodium hydroxide). Certain cigarettes can have relatively high nicotine smokable blends and filter elements having the coated non-woven filter material in intimate contact with an acidic material. Certain other cigarettes can have relatively low nicotine smokable blends and filter elements having the coated non-woven filter material in intimate contact with a basic material. Certain other cigarettes can be "ultra low tar" cigarettes including filter elements having the coated non-woven filter material in intimate contact with a basic material.
