Philosophy:
The doctor patient relationship is base on sharing: The patient shares his or her concerns, symptoms, problems, and complaints. The doctor in turn listens to these concerns with empathy, then exercises his medical expertise and shares his recommendation and advice. This process of mutual sharing implies trust, respect and confidence.
Such sharing is the key to the future of medicine. I believe we are in an era when the doctor, by way of such sharing, functions as a personal coach to the patient in prevention of illness, injury and disease. Health is not just the absence of illness or injury. It is the full measure of well being of the patient: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The doctor can support the patient in leaning about their diagnosis or risk factors, selecting appropriate treatments, helping them gain insight they might overlook on their own, and inspiring and supporting their efforts to achieve and maintain that well being. Thus, this ongoing sharing relationship is the key to the patients' achieving their goals in health.
Our current medical-economic and political climate implies a huge need for prevention as part of our health care system. Prevention requires that the doctor and patient develop goals in areas of nutrition, exercise, leisure activity, and learning stress management and good overall health habits for both the patient and their family. The relationship, based on sharing, trust, and confidence is the path to our mutual healthy futures.
