  • US Patent:
    6377579, Apr 23, 2002
  • Filed:
    Jul 22, 1998
  • Appl. No.:
    09/120700
  • Inventors:
    Yoram Ofek - Riverdale NY
  • Assignee:
    Synchrodyne Networks, Inc.
  • International Classification:
    H04L 1228
  • US Classification:
    3703954
  • Abstract:
This invention describes a method for exchanging timing messages and data packets between switches of a network with a common time reference, and between end stations and switches of such a network, over an asynchronous sub-network. The method entails transmission of messages conveying the common time reference, and data packets that are sent responsive to the timing information and predetermined scheduled time intervals. The switches of the network maintain a common time reference, which is obtained either from an external source (such as GPS-Global Positioning System) or is generated and distributed internally. The time intervals are arranged in simple periodicity and complex periodicity (like seconds and minutes of a clock).

The invention describes a signaling controller that is responsive to a setup request by computing a route of switches for data transmission, and a transmission schedule, which consists of predetermined time frames in which the switches along the route may forward packets of said setup request. The invention describes a switch signaling controller, which operates in every switch and which sends and is responsive to messages regarding reserving and releasing bandwidth on the switchs ports. The invention describes a protocol by which end-stations, gateways, signaling controller, and switch signaling controllers communicate to establish paths of specified capacities; and algorithms for processing signaling messages and finding transmission schedule in the network.
  • Monitoring, Policing And Billing For Packet Switching With A Common Time Reference

  • US Patent:
    6442135, Aug 27, 2002
  • Filed:
    Jul 22, 1998
  • Appl. No.:
    09/120672
  • Inventors:
    Yoram Ofek - Riverdale NY
  • Assignee:
    Synchrodyne Networks, Inc.
  • International Classification:
    H04L 1256
  • US Classification:
    370229, 3703951, 370401
  • Abstract:
This invention discloses a method for delay monitoring, policing and billing the data packet traffic in a packet switching network where the switches maintain a common time reference. This invention enables designated points inside the network to ascertain the level of packet traffic in predefine time intervals, and control the flow of packets and bring it back to predetermined levels in cases where the traffic volume exceeds predetermined levels. The information collected by the designated points facilitates billing for Internet services based on network usage, and identification of faulty conditions and malicious forwarding of packets that cause excessive delay beyond predetermined value.
  • Wavelength Division Multiplexing Combined With Time Division Multiplexing Using A Common Time Reference

  • US Patent:
    6674754, Jan 6, 2004
  • Filed:
    Mar 28, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/536708
  • Inventors:
    Yoram Ofek - Riverdale NY
  • Assignee:
Synchrodyne Networks, Inc. - Riverdale NY
  • International Classification:
    H04L 1256
  • US Classification:
    370389, 709248, 398 51
  • Abstract:
A switching method operates with very high-speed wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) links, i. e. , with multiple lambdas. An efficient time frame switching method is based on pre-defined switching schedules that are responsive to a global common time reference, where the global common time reference is divided into a plurality of contiguous periodic time frames. The plurality of data packets contained in each of the time frames can be switched from any incoming WDM channel to any subset of outgoing WDM channels. The outcome of this switching method is called fractional lambda switching.

The outputs of the optical switch are connected to its inputs with optical fiber with predefined lengths: d , d ,. . . , dj,. . . , dN, then changing the optical switch configuration forms an optical delay line with an optical fiber length that is the concatenation of any subset of the optical fibers with predefined lengths.
  • Switch Scheduling With Common Time Reference

  • US Patent:
    6731638, May 4, 2004
  • Filed:
    Oct 14, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    09/418970
  • Inventors:
    Yoram Ofek - Riverdale NY
  • Assignee:
Synchrodyne Networks, Inc. - Riverdale NY
  • International Classification:
    H04L 1256
  • US Classification:
    3703954, 370399, 370409, 370413
  • Abstract:
The input buffer switch scheduling method in this invention is tailored to operate responsively with respect to a global common time reference, such that the switching delay from input to output is deterministic. Consequently, such a switch can be employed in the construction of very high speed virtual leased lines (VLLs). Such VLLs can carry real-time traffic over packet switching networks while guaranteeing end-to-end performance. The switching and data packet forwarding method combines the advantages of both circuit and packet switching. According to the invention, timing information is not used for routing, and therefore, in the Internet, for example, the routing is done using IP addresses or an MPLS tag/label. Also, according to this invention, the switch memory access bandwidth is independent of the number of switching input/output ports. This provides the desired scalability property to the switch design, which is a direct outcome of using input port buffering together with a novel switch scheduling method.
