Abstract:

The invention is an improved system for rewinding fabric, particularly such fabrics which are more or less impervious and tend to entrap air between successive layers of the fabric being wrapped upon a core means as the rewinding proceeds. The system may be operated in a horizontal rolling mode or in a vertical rolling mode. When operating in the horizontal mode the system utilizes the weight of the supply roll to directly maintain more or less air-free layers, alternatively a minimum mechanical pressure is maintained at the supply roll in the horizontal mode as the weight of the supply roll diminishes near the end of the supply. When operating in the vertical mode, the pressure means is reversed, utilizing a constant mechanical pressure of the roll, or rolls, being wrapped against the supply roll as the rewinding proceeds. This direct pressure system to maintain more or less air-free layers eliminates the tedious and time-consuming threading of the fabric over and under a complicated system of a plurality of idler rolls, drive roll, rider roll, and a core.

A holder for dispensing stretch film from a roll comprises a cylindrical body and an arbor rotatably supported on the body. A flexible grip having internal ribs covers the body and the arbor, so that one can, by applying finger pressure to the grip, brake rotation of the arbor and thus control film tension. A snap-assembly construction is provided between the arbor and the shaft upon which it is installed.

The invention is an improved apparatus for the application of plastics stretch films to materials and items to be packaged and secured as a unit or packaged and secured to a shipping and transporting means. The apparatus consists of a pair of insertable adapters for the ends of a cylindrical core which holds a supply of plastic stretch films and a pair of tubular-like grip means for said insertable adapters. The grip means serves as a control means for the speed of paying out the plastics stretch film material, and as a means for applying tension on the film during the course of applying it to materials and items. The apparatus may be used for manual or machine application of film to materials. Brake shoe equivalents of the grip means may be used for machine applications.

Abstract:

A dispenser for a roll of stretch-wrap film enables the operator to apply variable tension to the end of the unwinding film. The dispenser has a spindle the end of which forms a hub which attaches securely to the core of the film roll, and rotates with the roll as the film is unwound. The spindle extends coaxially from the core of the film roll and is partially surrounded by a flexible hand grip. Bearings are coaxially mounted on the spindle and interposed beneath part of the hand grip, so that the spindle may rotate freely with respect to the hand grip. Part of the hand grip engages the spindle without interposition of bearings, so that the application of radial hand pressure results in frictional braking torque on the unwinding film roll, which enables tension to be applied to the end of the film.

Abstract:

Stretch wrapping film is reinforced by means of an auxiliary band that is laminated to the stretch film, thereby obtaining improved effective film strength without requiring the use of heavy duty films. Propagating tears that do occur are arrested by the band. The band may be rendered visually distinctive by coloration or imprinting, to identify the load with which it is wrapped, and to enable one to locate the leading edge of the film on the roll.

A stretch film wrapping device includes a frame supporting at least one flexible hollow handgrip. An end of a core of a roll of stretch film is inserted into the hand grip, so that braking force on the film may be regulated by squeezing the hand grip as film is applied to an array of articles. The device also supports at least one reel of auxiliary narrow band material on an axis different from that of the stretch film roll, so that the band material and the stretch film may be simultaneously applied.
