Abstract:A system and method to reduce the time and complexity of IT classroom setup. The present invention leverages virtual machine technology to create a new learning platform. In one embodiment, the system includes a classroom computer having installed therein a virtual machine platform, virtual machines, and an exercise launcher. The system also includes a database for associating classroom exercises with one or more of the virtual machines. The launcher has a user interface that enables a student to select a classroom exercise. In response to the student selecting a classroom exercise, the exercise launcher determines the virtual machines associated with the selected exercise and requests the virtual machine platform to launch the determined virtual machines. In this way, the classroom computer is automatically configured to enable the student to perform the entire exercise.

Abstract:An IT skills evaluation system and method for evaluating an individual's IT skills. According to one aspect of the invention, the individual is required to perform one or more practical exercises. A practical exercise is an evaluation device for evaluating not only an individual's knowledge, but also the individual's ability to apply their knowledge. One or more virtual machines are associated with each practical exercise, and the test taker must use these virtual machines to complete the exercise. In one aspect, a skills evaluation system according to one embodiment includes a testing computer on which the following software is installed: a virtual machine platform for allowing multiple virtual machines to run simultaneously on the testing computer and a practical skills evaluator for presenting exams to a test taker and scoring the exam. An exam is made up of one or more practical exercise. When the practical skills evaluator presents the practical exercise to the test taker the evaluator launches the one or more virtual machines so that the user can perform the exercise.

Abstract:A system and method for distance learning that can be used to teach a typical IT training course. In one aspect, a student that desires to perform remotely an exercise from an IT training course uses his/her Java-capable browser to connect to a distance learning web server. The web server downloads to the browser a list of exercises that the student can choose from. After the student selects an exercise, the web server launches the virtual machines that are needed for the student to perform the selected exercise. The virtual machines are launched on a computer system that is remote from the student, but the computer system includes a remote display server. After the virtual machines are launched on the remote system, a remote display viewer is loaded in the student's browser and the remote display viewer connects to the remote display server. After the viewer connects to the remote display server, the viewer displays one or more of the virtual machines in a window on the student's computer. Thus, after the viewer connects to the remote display server, the student can remotely interact with the virtual machines that are required for the student to perform the exercise.

Abstract:An improved coring device that incorporates a nonrotatable inner barrel disposed within the outer driving structure of the drill string which is coupled to a coring bit. A woven metal mesh sleeve is circumferentially mounted outside the inner barrel and tucked around its lower end. The lower end of the mesh sleeve in the inner barrel is in turn connected to a stripper tube which is pulled upwardly during the coring operation. As the core is cut by the coring bit and enters the inner barrel, the woven metal mesh sleeve is disposed about the core and constricts about the core when pulled upwardly by the stripper tube. The opposing end of the woven metal mesh sleeve is connected to a weight which serves to compress the metal sleeve when outside the inner barrel, thereby increasing its diameter to prevent binding or jamming.

Abstract:A system selectively completes a horn circuit through which electrical power is provided to a horn in an automobile. A relay is connected to a power supply and completes the horn circuit when a current signal passing through the relay has at least a threshold magnitude. A relay driver is selectively activated by processing circuitry. When it is activated, the relay driver is in a conductive state, and when it is not activated, the relay driver is in a high impendance state. When the relay driver is in the conductive state, it places the relay in series with a low potential conductor thereby establishing the current signal at at least the threshold magnitude. The processing circuitry is electrically connected to a manually actuated sensor, which may be a flexible potentiometer. The processing circuitry activates the relay driver when the manually actuated sensor is actuated. The processing circuitry receives electrical power from the relay when the relay driver is in the high impendance state, but receives essentially no electrical power from the relay when the relay driver is in the conductive state.

Abstract:A diamond drill bit for drilling bore holes in earth formations having a body connectible to a drilling string, and provided with a matrix portion of hard metals in which diamonds are surface set at the outer gage portion and adjacent to the bit axis, the hard metal matrix having preformed grooves in which preformed diamond impregnated segments are inserted, which are a mixture of diamonds and hard metals, and secured to the matrix portion by brazing material. During bit rotation in the bore hole, the segments cut the major portion of the hole, the diamonds being dispersed throughout the mass of each segment for selective release from the segment as the diamonds become damaged and lost, thereby exposing new diamonds in the segment at a controlled rate, and thereby producing continual resharpening of the segments. As a result, the drilling rate of the bit is increased, as well as the length of hole drilled.
