Abstract:

An obstacle avoidance system for obstacle detection in an opaque material. The system includes at least one electromagnetic signal source adapted to produce an electromagnetic source signal suitable for transmission through the opaque material, at least one electromagnetic signal detector adapted to receive reflected electromagnetic energy signals from discontinuities in the opaque material encountered by the electromagnetic source signal, and a reflected electromagnetic energy signal processor suitable for determining a presence of obstructions and/or strata variations within the opaque material. The system is preferably integral with a head element suitable for traversing the opaque material, for example a subterranean drill bit.

Abstract:

A sealing arrangement is provided for a product weigh scale for a food processing apparatus the weigh scale including a support for supporting a product, a member that carries the support, and a weight sensor that senses vertical load on the member. The sealing arrangement includes a seal surrounding the member beneath the support, the seal having a first sealing surface configured to be sealed against a cabinet, and a second sealing surface. The seal is movable between an inactive position wherein the second sealing surface is out of contact with the support and a sealing position wherein the second sealing surface seals against the support. The seal includes a stationary part having the first sealing surface and a sliding part having the second sealing surface. A plurality of springs urge the sliding part toward the sealing position and a source of pressurized fluid is injected between the sliding part and the stationary part to urge the sliding part toward the inactive position. The pressurized fluid has a sufficient pressure to overcome the urging of the springs and maintains the sliding part in the inactive position during normal operation of the scale, wherein upon loss of the supply of pressurized fluid, the springs cause the sliding part to assume the sealing position.

The communications method for synchronization of service event related communications at an event management platform, may include receiving a notification transmitted from a service event source including event information related to at least one service offered by the service event source and for a mobile wireless device associated with a given service user, and including a synchronization value associated with a service instance. The method may further include storing the synchronization value, and receiving a subsequent notification transmitted from the service event source including a subsequent synchronization value associated with the service instance. The subsequent synchronization value is compared with the stored synchronization value and based thereon a request is generated and sent to the service event source for event information associated with notifications having synchronization values between the subsequent synchronization value with the stored synchronization value. The notifications are provided to the mobile wireless device associated with the given service user.

Abstract:

A back-flow prevention valve assembly is disclosed for use with a vacuum pump or the like and employs a valve element movable between positions opening or closing a passageway through the assembly. In the event of pump failure, a control valve, which is operated by fluid from the pressure side of the pump, vents ambient air behind the valve element to assist it in moving rapidly to the closed position to prevent backflow. After resumption of pumping, a controlled withdrawal of ambient air behind the valve element delays opening of the valve until the pump has created a sufficient vacuum to minimize influx of air upstream when the valve opens.

Abstract:

A unique gerotor-type pump is disclosed for pumping gases. The pump has an inner gear-type rotor mounted within and rotating off-center with respect to an outer gear-type rotor ring, about a parallel axis. Surfaces of the teeth of the inner rotor are in continuous contact with the outer rotor to define at least one pumping chamber which alternately expands and contracts as the inner and outer rotors turn. An elongated inlet port is positioned to communicate with the pumping chamber during a substantial portion of the cycle when the pumping chamber is expanding, (the intake cycle) and an outlet port is positioned to communicate with the pumping chamber only just prior to and at the end of the contraction or exhaust cycle. Oil for sealing and lubricating between moving parts of the pump is provided by employing differential pressure created by the pump's own operation to draw oil through passageways which communicate between an oil reservoir and the pumping chamber.
