I think IONQ is already preparing for a new qubit technology. Their co-founders, Chris Monroe and Jungsang Kim, both world leaders in trapped ion technology, left the company towards the end of 2023 to return to their academic research.

World's first time crystals cooked up using new recipe
Using Yaos recipe as guidance, two groups have now created time crystals in the lab. Last September, a group headed by Chris Monroe of the University of Maryland in College Park built a time crystal out of a string of trapped ytterbium ions.

Researcher unveils time crystal as new form of matter
The time crystal created by Chris Monroe and his colleagues at the University of Maryland employs a conga line of 10 ytterbium ions whose electron spins interact, similar to the qubit systems being tested as quantum computers. To keep the ions out of equilibrium, the researchers alternately hit them
trolled NOT operation did not measure either qubit, so the quantum nature of the states was preserved. It was a simple gate, but it was interesting because it was clear how to scale the system up, says coauthor Chris Monroe of the University of Maryland in College Park. Since then, researchers ha

Prediction of Physics Nobel Prize Premature. Maybe Next Year for the Higgs?
m computation and quantum information theory gets a Nobel. Depending on how the committee divvies it up, it could go to any number of people, such as Ray Laflamme, Charles Bennett, Gilles Brassard, Chris Monroe, David Wineland, Seth Lloyd, Neil Gershenfeld, Ike Chuang, David Deutsch, and Peter Shor.
"Turns out that we were trying to make certain quantum states of these atoms that would make for better clocks, and this new field just sort of fell into our laps," says Chris Monroe, who was working in Wineland's lab at the time.
