Cygnus cargo ship leaves International Space Station, begins new mission in orbit
"Id just like to say farewell to the S.S. Alan bean and thank you to the entire Cygnus NG-12 team for making Expedition 61 highly successful," NASA astronaut and Expedition 61 flight engineer Andrew Morgan said during a live webcast of the spacecraft's departure. He and his fellow Expedition 61 creso took an extended detour on its way out in August it was the first to test out a new release procedure. Typically astronauts on board the station manually operate the robotic arm to release these cargo vessels, but this time NASA tried a different method for the S.S. Alan Bean's departure.

Antares launches Cygnus cargo spacecraft on first CRS-2 mission
The Antares 230+ rocket lifted off from Pad 0-A at the Mid Atlantic Regional Spaceport here at 9:59 a.m. Eastern. The Cygnus spacecraft, named by Northrop Grumman the S.S. Alan Bean after the late Apollo-era astronaut, separated from the rockets upper stage about eight and a half minutes later.

One disappointment was that the first TV coverage from the Moon wasnt in colour. That was scheduled to take place during Apollo 12. Unfortunately, when astronaut Alan Bean was setting up the camera on the lunar surface, he accidentally pointed it at the Sun and fried the electronics.
When Pete Conrad and Alan Bean landed on the moon during the Apollo 12 mission, one of their tasks was to enter the 650-foot-wide Surveyor Crater. But as they skirted its rim, searching for the best path down, they informed Houston that the crater was far too steep.
